We invited Marsha Bradfield, Head of Intercultural Practice at the Graduate School of University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins, and Mina Alacalioglu, Performance Program Coordinator at Central Saint Martins, to hold the event “REBEL: A New Attempt at an Art Education Evaluation System by the University of the Arts London” for faculty members and students.
For many years, the University of the Arts London has conducted research and experimentation on art education evaluation systems together with a UK-based team. Based on this experience, they developed an evaluation kit called “REBEL,” which has been tested and implemented in various contexts over the past few years. On this occasion, we invited Marsha Bradfield, who has been involved in the development and dissemination of REBEL at UAL, to lead a workshop at Tokyo University of the Arts.
The two-day workshop was organized separately for faculty members and students from across the university, encouraging participants to reconsider the future of art education beyond the boundaries of departments and disciplines. On the second day, students from the University of the Arts London joined online, and President Hibino also participated partway through the session, enabling wide-ranging discussions from diverse perspectives. In light of the recent trend in European higher education toward placing greater emphasis on individual practice rather than universal theory, the workshop provided a meaningful opportunity to reexamine the approach to art education at Tokyo University of the Arts.
REBEL stands for “Recognising Experience Based Education and Learning.” It is a kit designed to help individuals and groups evaluate their learning experiences and explore ideas for future activities. The kit consists of 108 cards divided into six categories. In the workshop, participants use these cards to reassess their core competencies (attitudes, knowledge, and skills) and engage in dialogue aimed at problem-solving, thereby promoting “learning through practice.”
