The National Institute of Design (NID) works with the Indian government and local governments to develop sustainable social infrastructure, production systems, and new product development for crafts in various parts of India. We held a research and workshop program in Ahmedabad, India to learn about the relationship between SDGs and arts in India.

Since its establishment, NID has supported the promotion of traditional crafts as industry and cultural heritage in India, and has conducted comprehensive research on sustainability in collaboration with government and administration bodies. In this program, we learned about the current state of traditional crafts in India and collaborations between NID and local traditional industries through lectures by NID faculty members on the diversity of traditional crafts in various parts of India, the issues they face, and sustainability. We also conducted field research in a pottery community on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, conducted a workshop on Indian chintz, which uses dyeing and weaving techniques such as hand-painted coloring, and toured modern and traditional architecture in the city.
