Tokyo University of the Arts hosted a lecture by Dr. Kaori Hasegawa titled “Modern Emperors and Tokyo: Urban and Architectural History from the Perspective of Ritual Space.” The session explored how Tokyo’s transformation into a modern capital was deeply shaped by imperial and ritual spaces, offering insights into the intersection of architecture, politics, and culture. Students from Monash University — representing diverse disciplines such as architecture, design, fine art, and curatorial studies — joined the session as part of their program on Designing Anthropology in Tokyo. Following the lecture, participants took part in a guided tour of the Ueno campus, gaining firsthand understanding of the university’s historical architecture and cultural setting.
